There is a way of altering the behaviour. Open gconf-editor and change the value of /apps/gnome-power-manager/action_button_power from 'interactive' to 'shutdown'. This doesn't change my position, the default behaviour is wrong. -- Pressing power button displays dialog, it does not switch off
