Alas, I've installed Red Hat Enterprise Linux Desktop 5 so that I can
use this machine without interruption. I'll happily re-install Ubuntu

I tried adding gnome-settings-daemon to my GNOME Session (System -
Preferences - Session), but that does not seem to have made any
difference.
There's no reliable way for me to reproduce this bug. Instead, it
happens randomly: sometimes when I launch a new application from my
GNOME bar,

As I am used to Ubuntu, I thought the Launchpad was this universal bug

Here (ArchLinux 2007.05 Duke + Gnome 2.18.2), just switching between a
portrait and a landscape image makes the image display freeze (but
buttons seem still active). Nor error neither warnings, and the bug has
no impact on gdb output.
