Hi,
Pardon me if I'm misunderstanding, but it very much seems to me that the
gdm/lightdm configuration scripts are unconditionally setting the
default value of the debconf choice to gdm, irrespective of the previous
value of the setting.
Is that normal behaviour ?

This worked for me:
echo debconf debconf/priority select critical
lightdm shared/default-x-display-manager select gdm
gdm shared/default-x-display-manager select lightdm | debconf-set-selections
You will likely want to set the debconf priority back to high when
you're done.
