Ahh, I reread the original bug. Yes, the ^ key will only
work in scientific mode because that's where the x^y button
resides.
The key equivalent of x squared is @. If you hover the mouse
over the button you'll see this information.
In gcalctool Basic mode, I used

I must disagree, then, to why I cannot add a ^ in Advanced mode. It seems
silly that a user must delete the 2 from the ^2 (squared) to be able to cube a
number, etc.
Shouldn't this at least be added as a feature request instead of
rejecting it?

I tried this with Gcalctool 5.9.14.
the key ^ works only in the scintific mode.
I wasn't able to add a ^ with the keyboard in view standard
extended finanztechnisch
