After installing Gutsy, I noticed the asterisks have becomes the new
default!
Why?
The asterisks are not as visually pleasing as the circles. Can we revert
the default back to the circles?

Running Gutsy and just applied the most recent updates. As of today, I have
started getting '*' in the password mask too.
Version of GDM installed:
ii gdm2.19.8-0ubuntu2
GNOME Display Manager

Fix seems to have been released in Gutsy. I get the * character now.

i can confirm this behaviour, no matter what you select, always use
circles, as attachment goes a log showing what happens when i unckeck
and then check the use of circles from gdmsetup.
