I use fglrx driver from repository, and yes, CTRL+ALT+F1 (=>F6) works
without problems...
I will try to send the log messages ASAP

work correctly? Could you attach /var/log/messages /var/log/syslog
/var/log/Xorg.0.log after getting the hang?
