using the search funcion on the desktop (ctrl-f) opens a search field on the 
top of the desktop, which is half under the brown ubuntu-bar (see screenshot).
Pressing Esc for exiting the search bar will open a nautilus windows with the 
location x-nautilus-desktop:/// (see screenshot).
