Actually, you can select text, but the selection doesn't show on-screen.
Ctrl-C still copies it.

I'm not sure exactly what you are looking for in an example. However,
say you open the following document
http://research.microsoft.com/~simonpj/Papers/pj-lester-
book/student.djvu
with djview (which I installed using apt-get) it is possible to use one
of the selection tools to select text
