Even though you are probably seeing: "appmenu-gtk is already the newest version." You're probably running on a 64-bit distro. Try installing the 32-bit library: $ sudo apt-get install appmenu-gtk:i386
and the messages like: 'undefined symbol: menu_proxy_module_load' should disappear. Also, 'sudo apt-get install --reinstall gtk2-engines-murrine:i386' will probably fix the 'Unable to locate theme engine in module_path: "murrine"' messages.
