with compiz disabled, it runs normally. but i really like the desktop
effects and would rather not go w/o them. any help?

It works well with the other user and desktop effects enabled?, if so
you probably can delete your compiz configuration for your user with: rm
-rf ~/.gconf/apps/compiz and see if that works.
