well, it is not fixed for me. I upgraded from feisty to gutsy on
September 26th, and system sounds do not play anymore

with today's upgrade the system sounds works again, for me at least,
could you confirm?, so this report can be closed.

Can't hear gnome
i can confirm this too, from gnome-sound-properties can hear the sound,
but doing the actions in the desktop which should trigger the sounds,
nothing plays.
