I have the same problem, exept it happens all the time. Even when I had

I have the same identical problem with Gutsy RC, gnome-appearance-properties is
frozen just compiz is enabled but it is not the only window frozen. If I start
gnome-screenshot the windows is frozen, the application menu don't show up
selected items and so on...
I attach you some useful log/files
I can't reproduce this bug anymore in the release candidate, so I guess
it's fixed.

You can get a backtrace of a frozen processus it gives indication of
where it's blocked
