I have almost this same problem on Karmic.
I use Kubuntu 9.10, and upon inserting a mixed mode CD, the KDE
automounter offers me to play it as an audio CD or copy the CD with K3B.
Neither of it will work, and I also cannot access the data part of the
CD.
