I forgot to mention, that the error occurs not only when i change the
icons but also the border and the look of the buttons (dont know the
correct names at the tabs, in german it's
'Symbole','Fensterrahmen','Fensterinhalt', sry).

Is the crash reproducible? I cannot reproduce it here. If it is, could you
provide some more info from gdb, please?
In particular, after the capplet crashed:
(gdb) up
(gdb) print *a
(gdb) print *b
would be interesting to know.
