Thanks very much for the workaround. It would be great to have this be a
standard feature in the UI though. I have exactly the same problem as Graham
(junior IT persons who like buttons and lights)

but the gconf-editor solution works just fine. thx!
btw: this feature is also essential for kiosk systems.

you can disable it via gconf-editor, just set /apps/gnome-power-
manager/buttons/power to nothing. you must set this key for each user.

I also have this problem. In my case, for some reason the power button
is pressed (i.e., not by me) during wakeup from suspend. I could work
around this with a do nothing option, but instead my best alternative
is ask me. This almost works, except that for some reason the dialog
box is either
