Ok, I think I found what the problem was. I tried to see if I would have the same problem in Hardy. So I added the applet in the panel and I got the nice dialog attached. So in my main ubuntu installation I probably forgot about this dialog or missed it somehow. When I went and enabled auto

I'm not using desktop effects. My gusty also was clean installed, if it makes any difference. A correction on my previous post: The textbox is NOT grayed out I first though. It just can't get the focus, so that I can start typing in it. -- Address Book Search applet does not work
