I don't know if this is the same bug but since my 17.10 updated Thunderbird to 52.4.0 I am faced with this issue consistently. Thunderbird is unusable this way and I have manually installed a 52.3.0 version to be able to manage my e-mail. This happens both when running under X or Wayland. Gnome
