I can reproduce this bug. Anytime the window manager is switched from
compiz to metacity (or vice versa) and you press a volume key g-s-d will
crash, themes will flicker, and you have to wait about 5 seconds before
volume functionality is restored. From then on you can use the volume
keys freely

Yes. I just found that I can reproduce it by running
metacity --replace
to switch from compiz to metacity, and pressing the volume keys while this
transition is happening.
