I open gnome-calculator in basic mode. Remember: I have locale LC_NUMERIC=it_IT.UTF-8 where decimal separator is comma. I perform all following operations using the numeric keypad. i press the canc/dot key (bottom right) and then '5*7' in the entry box i see '.5x7' i hit enter in the history
