To
Minor progress: desktop-icons-ng emulates a traditional Xorg desktop
window so is able to convince gnome-shell to fade the icons in/out
properly. But only in Xorg sessions.

For patching into Ubuntu I think we should still use:

It's only closed upstream because they want a different design. But that
will not be as simple and reliable as the above patch, which should also
be backportable.
