-test with gnome desktop-data from hardy (1:2.22.2-ubuntu2), thing are the
same, the background is still corrupted!

the way the changed signal is handled seems to have fixed the bug, not
sure why but the change is not too complicated, doesn't seem to break
anything and fix the issue

this seems to be fixed on trunk:
Thanks, switching to gnome-desktop trunk fixed it.
I did not expect that a huge amount of gnome-bg patch sets has been committed
during the last months.
According to viewvc, the following commit might have fixed the issue [in case a
distributor wants to backport

Ubuntu 8.04 - Nautilus 2.22.2
Used one of the suplied image background. When switching from list view
to Icon a corrupted background appears. This is consistent. When I
change background to a color the problem goes away.
