Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

I'm sorry if my terminology sucks, but I'm a new user (installed yesterday).
I'm using Gutsy, when I turn on desktop effects on any settings above "none" I
can only switch work areas by pressing Ctrl+Alt+Left/Right Arrow. When I do
this on the miniature on the lower-right all the windows disappear from the
first work area but the highlight stays (it appears, from that miniature, that
I'm always on the first desktop). I can still switch using the combination
above or by dragging windows to the edge, but if I try to actually click on the
second desktop (I'm only using two at the moment) I see the transition effect
but everything else disappear (the menu panel with clock etc on top and the one
on bottom with the "desktop miniature thingy" and the recycle bin) and I'm only
left with the background. Even the dvd icon on the desktop disappears. I can
still use Ctrl-Alt-Arrows to see the nice transition effect, but I'm now
switching between two identical background images and can only hard reset my
computer.
