I have noticed in gutsy and in hardy that on a fresh reboot the display
goes to sleep ok (after the correct time interval), but after some time
it stops going to sleep. I cannot say what causes that, if there's
something disturbing or hanging the interval count. After suspend-resume
it's the same problem.
