Mikael Nilsson, the issue you are seeing is that gnome-settings-daemon
is not
I'd like to add that apply doesn't work, but the settings *are*
applied after logging out and in again.

Just to add my specs. my graphics is built-in and when i go to screens +
graphics is says I have a Intel 810. As for the monitor I have no idea
what make/model it is as there is no markings what so ever and it just
comes up as plug n play.
To those who still can't change resolution it did work
changing via system administrations screens and graphics only work per
login session after logout or restart the screen always reset back to
640x400 and the deskbar applet screw up badly.
