Problem solved for me:
Restarted xserver 6times (was unable to switch to console), logged in and
started by startx.
Ran update-manager and updated serveral packages including gdm, human-theme etc.
et voila: system starts normally!

An update fixed the problem for me as well.
Had to change the repository mirror to the main server though, since my mirror
hadn't updated since Apr 3.

My temporal solution:
#Ctrl+Alt+F2
login
#sudo killall gdm
#startx

Almost the same, but I have no problem changing to text console. Only
happened last (couple of?) days.
I use the Ubuntu graphical face chooser.

Changing the theme from HumanList to happygnome-list (in gdm.conf-
custom) seems to solve the problem for me. No idea why, though.
