Actually, this is a bug for me. I have totem installed, root's nautilus
shows thumbnails and mine not. To be even more funny, root's nautilus
shows thumbnails even for files bigger than 5 MB, even though in its
preferences there is set an option to show them only to files smaller
than that...
And
closing the bug then, that's not really one and there is already some
request to have an action to refresh the thumbnails in nautilus

Ok, guys. The problem was that I had installed the codecs after DLing
videos. After deleting the contents of my .thumbnails folders all but
one are working properly.

I'm not familiar with the usage of gnome-video-thumbnailer. All gconf
thumbnail options are enabled. It seems to work properly with .avi.

Are you able to watch and/or thumbnail the videos with (e.g.) totem-
video-thumbnailer manually? Also, can you verify that you have
thumbnailers registered for the file's MIME Types in GConf:
