Title:
Nautilus windows should close on unmount
To manage notifications about this bug go
there is some intelligent thinking in nautilus 2.30 for this
comment on the upstream patch that was pushed
This patch checks if a window is displaying or has displayed (in history) the
root folder of the mount using g_file_equal in addition to the existing
g_file_has_prefix checks. Note that

Agreeing with Sebastian and mac_v, this contradicts behavior of another
paper cut and there is significant criticism of the behavior proposed
here (I'm not saying the proposed behavior is wrong, it's just
contentious).

I'd still highly recommend just closing the window, or at least making
it an option somewhere. I work in an environment where I'm constantly
plugging in and unplugging USB storage devices and I inevitably end up
with a zillion windows that I have to close. It's pretty annoying.

@Gary , adding an option to auto-close the window is a feature request ,
Feature requests are not papercuts. Kindly open a separate bug upstream for
that.
@David , Bug #386517 is a contradiction to this! Both have a milestone set !
That is Unmounting a drive sends Nautilus to /media instead

Nautilus windows should close on unmount
Sebastien made a valid point (Although I would prefer for myself that
the windows just close automatically). How about this proposal:
When I unmount a volume, the right area of a nautilus window (with the
files) goes gray, with a message in the center like Please wait while
writing data to the
the current behaviour is a design decision in fact, before that users
were being confused by things closing on screen without then clicking on
the close button and were reporting bugs about nautilus crashing, not
sure that's a right target for a change

+1 to Sebastien Bacher.
It will cause more surprise to the average users. I'm *not sure why this
is even being considered for papercuts* !
It no way increases usability of average users.

@Psy[H[]: Ins't this the same as spatial-mode VS navigational-mode
nautilus? I mean, if in spatial-mode the unmount should close the
window, whether in navigational-mode it should show HOME instead. No
need for a new switch.

yes, when we use a simple windows with multiple tabs, closing it is not
the smartest solution.
Why not change the current dir to computer:/// ??

Hello,
Except maybe in contexts where you have a lot of windows, and you have
to search among your taskbar to ensure none of your windows is the one

There could be many ambiguous situations. For example, I use single nautilus

with the only tab opened. And I do not want that window to close on its own.
So it would be good to make this behavior switchable or
Errr... I see I'm not in the majority here, but eyh, I can still give my
opinion... ;) Two major principles in HMI ergonomics are :
- to let the user control the GUI,
- to provide users with feedback so that they remain conscious of the system
state.
It seems to me that applying this principle
Unfortunately, it does not use the same window so you end up with
several windows you need to close.
I used to just close the window as soon as it came up since I usually
use the command line in a terminal window and then umount via the icon
on the desktop. But I've accessed the mount via the

the user would have a definite feedback that the media was safely
removed from the system!

I'm of the same opinion. When I unmount something, i dont' want t be
redirected to /media or to /home/$USER

This is still a problem for me using a fairly up to date hardy.
To reproduce:
* Plug in a USB stick
* A nautilus window will open on the media
* Using the gnome-disk-mounter applet, unmount the usb disk
* The nautilus window is still open, but switches folder to the home folder.
--
Nautilus
is that specific to this applet use?

No, I've tried using pumount on the command line, and by opening the
'Computer' window, right clicking on the USB stick and selecting
'Unmount volume'. In both cases the new nautilus window doesn't close
and switches the open folder to my home folder.

I was just looking for the same thing; this is still he behavior on
Hardy, and it's counter-intuitive.
When one unmounts a device, one expects it to be ejected and off the
system, not to launch a new window. It creates clutter and can be
confusing to new users.
There must be an easy way to do
I was about to file the same bug. When I unmount my USB stick, I get
