I have sometime this problem @ cold startup, but without any iPod plugged.
When I have no icon, no background, etc... at startup, I kill the process
launched with nautilus --no-default-window --sm-client-id default2 command
line, and then it restarts OK with the following command nautilus

Everything works fine, except the desktop-background and its icons,..
and the panel's alpha blending is messed up (only grey, no transparency)

you can try to send the bug directly to bugzilla.gnome.org too but the
issue is that thousand of bugs are open and only limited ressources to
work on those
is nautilus working when you get the issue?

It happens more often, if I leave my iPod plugged and shutdown ubuntu.
remove any power supply. And do a coldstart..

Thanks for your report, what do you mean with a coldstart? a normal
startup? May you please attach your ~/.xsession-errors file after you
get the issue? thanks.

A coldstart means that it did not have any previous power supply (PC is cold).
