I have ran into the same problem with choppy start up sound, cd
playback, youtube videos (both echoing audio and choppy video)
Only instructions from the ubuntu wiki was to provide this link:

didn't include enough information.
First of all, can you tell me whether this only happens with Rhythmbox,
or is the audio quality bad with other players
