I agree. This is not fixed. In 11.10, I still see the visualization in
Firefox even when it is disabled in totem. Re-sizing the window to be small
does not matter either.
It is wasting almost 50% of my CPU!

I do not understand why gnome-bugs #542491 is marked as fixed. They
fixed the bug by having the plugin disable visual effects if the
widget size is under 150 pixels. It is sensible to disable visual
effects for a widget under 150 pixels, but it does not fix the bug when
there still is no option to

The problem described in the title was definitely _not_ fixed.
Totem plugin shows visual effects even disabled
with gconf-editor or the standalone totem program's configuration dialog
(same effect: only the standalone totem honors /apps/totem/show_vfx = false)

I can confirm it. Using 8.04 (upgraded from 8.04) and totem-xine.
Although, I think this happens in earlier versions of Ubuntu. I would
like to give some details of what I have found:
The Totem mozilla plugin does not honour the gconf keys that control the
usage of the visual effects when playing
Ah! a typo there. I meant I upgraded from 7.04. :)
Yes and forgot to say that the plugin must be also able to read the
/schemas/apps/totem/visual key.
