Failsafe gnome does not start; failsafe terminal does, but of course
does very little. Loopback appears correct. Starting a gnome session
from failsafe terminal results in the terminal gaining a semitransparent
border and the intrepid background coming up, but nothing else- GNOME
reports the usual
