I don't think that has anything to do with the panel. Could you try
running them from a command line rather?

Er, sorry. not sure how I missed the last comment. Was in Hoary. I think
it's actually when I left it over the weekend, and my nfs-mounted home
dir goes away due to kerberos ticket expiry.
