Presumably these 3000 series laptops have working battery status under
Windows. Do we know how Windows manages that despite a broken DSDT and
the lack of the smartbattery alternative? At some point, we have to

The 3000 series don't have smart batteries, they just have buggy DSDTs.
Regardless, this should be fixed in the next kernel release. I'm closing
this since the original bug (smart batteries are unsupported) is fixed.

Now computer knows when AC is unplugged, but on unplug shuts down
computer.

Gnome battery meter does not know if AC is plugged or not, but power
manager knows it. Shutdown on battery critical can be disabled in power
manager preferences, but the default should be to not shut down computer
