The screenshot suggests that no password dialog appeared after pressing
the Install updates button, and the fact that you say you can't launch
Software Sources suggests to me that this is a gksu problem.
Could you please post the output of gksu -d software-properties-gtk

After rebooting I selected a single package to install. Update Manager
is running and shows Downloading list of changes but after 15
minutes it has not stopped. This will continue forever. Appreciate
any help. Thank you.

Here is another screen shot showing the Update Manager running but in
System Monitor it shows it 'sleeping.'
