As Andrew suggested I used killall gnome-volume-control
After that I can use gnome-volume-control to start it again.
I'm going to wipe and reload with Alpha 3 (coming today I believe) this
weekend. I'll report back on the status then.

I get exactly the same error as above, by Lifyre,
but in any case.
$ gnome-volume-control --debug

confirmed, gnome-volume-control does not run on Jaunty.
version: 2.25.1-0ubuntu1.
It appears that every now and then I *can* get it to start, but only
occasionally.
perhaps a session manager bug?

It seems that gnome-volume-control is started at some point previously.
(possibly by gnome-volume-control-applet)
killing the existing process (killall gnome-volume-control) allows it to
be run normally again.
