It certainly does appear that the escape side of things was fixed at
least as far back as Feisty. However I would argue the real issue still
remains.
I'm almost certain that / typeahead find is NOT in the HIG
(http://developer.gnome.org/projects/gup/hig/2.0/input-keyboard.html
If you use Ctrl-F to get the find dialog up pressing escape does not
dismiss it as in other programs.
Just tried this in up-to-date gutsy, and Escape does dismiss the search
bar.
Also, is the mapping of / to typeahead find part of the GNOME HIG, or
something? It seems redundant to have Ctrl+F
