I did follow the advise of Paweł Mański
Deleting .evolution/mail/local/folders.db has the expected effect. Now
everything in Inbox is visible !!
It is working.
Now, I can see all my mails. I don't understand why but I am happy

I don't think you have to move you full .evolution folder.
As described above, In my case, it worked to remove
~/.evolution/mail/local/folders.db* file and restart evolution. After that,
everything works like a charm...

Can not see new email..get this error evolution-mail-Message: Error
Thank for the solution...
- I had the error after upgrade from ubuntu 8.10 to 9.04
- when I imported the settings from the user to another one it was the same
- I just rename .evolution to .evolutionBROKE and restart
it's now OK

You received this bug
I deleted ~/.evolution/mail/local/folders.db* and 'viewed' each folder
in evolution to reindex (an error is shown on the first view since it is
reindexing... i think nothing to worry about). Everything seems to work
fine now.

I have the same problem. I can't say how reproduce this, but Evolution isn't
showing my new emails, but I can see them in the file Inbox.
New emails in subfolders are visible.

After shutdown evolution, I moved away .evolution/mail/local/Inbox*,
reopen the evolution and import the Inbox - but it didn't solved
problem, and was even worse, because no emails where visible (other
subfolders where ok).
Deleting .evolution/mail/local/folders.db has the expected effect. Now
* Is this reproducible?
* If so, what specific steps should we take to recreate this bug?
Well reproducing it is hard for a bug that may be a damaged db, but now
two people had it happen therefore it has been reproduced
Steps you can take? Well use Evolution for a couple of years and wait to see

I moved the .evolution folder to .evolutoinBROKE and started it up again and it
worked.
Not sure why.
