Same problem with trying to select text from a single column in a two column document (i.e. virtually all scientific papers that I read). I attempt to highlight lines from one column and the entirety of the adjacent column is also selected. Seems like a very silly problem that should be fixed

I have a similar problem. When trying to select a paragraph of text in a multicolumn document, evince selects text from other columns too and so the whole lot is copied. I am using Ubuntu 9.04 with Evince Document Viewer 2.26.0. You can try the bug using the attached PDF. Try selecting any text
