The applet is back on my panel but I'll give some information.
Before an update yesterday, I was able to see the applet simply by using the
2.6.27-7-generic kernel (intrepid).
However, it wasn't here after a reboot with the jaunty kernel.
Maybe the issue was caused by my hardware : an intel
I read the ~/.xsession-errors but nothing concerning the mixer-applet.
Since I don't know how to use gdb, could you tell me how to do it ?
I tried to figure out the command-line to show the applets-dialog, and I found
the panel-test-applets.
When clicking on Execute with the applet
you can run /usr/lib/gnome-applets/mixer_applet2 on a command line and
then try adding it to the gnome-panel, does gnome-volume-control starts
correctly?

Thanks for the report, is there anything under ~/.xsession-errors that
might indicate something related? or please attach that file to the
report, if there's nothing it'd be worth to run the applet under gdb,
but let's wait for that information first.
