Ok, confirming, that's really a corner case when trying to apply a
background change to the desktop rather than to a directory in nautilus,
to send to bugzilla.gnome.org

videocard and driver do you use? Do you use the desktop effects option?
Does it make a difference?

How can I find out what video card and driver is being used? Hardware
Drivers reports only No proprietary drivers are in use on this
system. The Appearance Preferences report that Desktop effects could
not be enabled.
