Yes, and yes! Sometimes the sent / received messages sound for Pidgin is
just a crackling noise, come to think of it. And I do use the
crossfading option ... I originally switched to it to get rid of this
problem, but it sometimes still surfaces.

Just a note: Restarting seems to fix the problem. It comes up fairly
often, however.
