Same problem using Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala. Using Ext4 as well.

Tray opens & closes when fin
I'm getting exactly the same behaviour; the tray opens about 3 min after
"finalizing" starts, then completes with "success" message about 2 min later,
but the disk is completely unusable.
Same thing happens when burning a dvd, except can slow dvd burn speed down to
x8 and so far has worked ok.
