I'm getting this as well. It asks for the root password which it never
needed in Jaunty. I always cancel the dialog which aborts the mount, and
then select mount manually from the disk mounter gnome applet. This is
with my USB media player.

Yes it's reproducible, after startup you have to authenticate the first time
you plug-in the device, afterwards it mounts automatically, but read-only again.
To reproduce install jaunty and upgrade to karmic, but it worked after the
update so it must have been some of the following ones.

The cardreader works fine when already connected to the pc while
booting, but when removing it and connecting it the first time, the same
