This occurs in jaunty as well as in karmic, and I have a vague memory of
tripping over this in previous versions as well.

works fine.

And it works fine under 2up, 4up, 9up, and 16up. Only 16up is broken.
Coincidently, this is also the only mode that uses landscape layout in a
non-trivial manner.
