mouse.

I was able to duplicate simply by opening a multi-line text document and
double clicking to select various words/lines. It became easily
noticeable when following those steps.

This is interesting, I was able to reproduce this problem. I didn't
notice it until I had a few lines typed out in the text editor, but I
definitely notice it.

The jitter only occurs when releasing a left-click (i.e., from a normal
click or a select drag). Right clicking, wheel scrolling, arrow keys,
etc don't trigger a jitter.

Starman, I believe I have the same problem. Does the jitter also happen
for you when you move the cursor with the arrow keys?
Also, which fonts are you using? If I use the Liberation fonts, it does
not happen. If I use the Droid fonts, it does happen.

I must add that when I say refocus I mean use focus follows mouse, not
a click to focus.
