Upstream commented on the bug asking that:
Can you try this with a recent gvfs to see if it still a problem? Is it easily
reproducible?
Also try using the cmdline tools:
gvfs-copy smb://host/path ~/file.bin
could you reply to those questions?

to open a bug new bug, maybe check also http://bugzilla.gnome.org,
that's a better place to report code issues with gvfs, we don't have
gvfs hackers in the Ubuntu team but mostly distribute the upstream code

I can confirm this bug affects me on Precise trying to access a windows
share through Nautilus. Nautilus views the files and folders with no
problem, but any attempt to open them results in an invalid argument
message from the opened application.
