Furthermore, I have also determined that when I try to drag and drop
files around the ftp server I get an error, although copy paste from
the context menus works correctly.

I have this same problem when using all ftp servers are my college. I
don't have access to the logs though.

The FTP server is at my hosting company (linux-based but I don't know
any more than that, sadly) I will try gnomevfs-mv.

Thanks for your bug. What FTP server do you use? Could you look to the
logs of the server what is the issue exactly? Does gnomevfs-mv work fine
to rename it?
