I'm also caught by this bug. I have two groups: MSN and Google Talk. However, on Lucid 64-bit (my desktop), I never have the group MSN and all contacts which should be in MSN just appear in the 'root', without any group. On my desktop, telepathy-butterfly crashes a lot. See bug report #538062.

I had this problem too, except I tried to move my grouped contacts into the unnamed group, because it looked cleaner. Instead of moving them, empathy deleted them. Now half of my contacts are completely gone. :( This happened in 2.28.1.1. -- missing groups https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/433294
