I had a look at the kernel log and I could not see any kernel specific
reason why this happened. I suspect it is a user space application error
rather than a kernel problem. I suspect this may be a gnome desktop
issue rather than a kernel problem.

gnome-desktop is the about GNOME dialog, nothing to do with that, the
issue would probably be an xorg crash or similar
