I just installed Karmic on my girlfriend computer, I have exactly the
same problem.
Trying to open a jpeg often result in 100% cpu (bug 445404).
And there are never any thumbnails for jpeg attachment : always the default JPG
icon.

exchange? does it works fine with another user created on your system ?

I tested on my 3 accounts (1 POP and 2 IMAPs), same problem…
With another user I don't know.
